In order to become a ski or snowboard instructor, you must gain an IASI qualification. To do this you must first of all join IASI as an associate member. After this you can apply for training and assessment courses to qualify as an IASI Level 1 instructor. The requirements for this qualification are the same for both skiing and snowboarding. The courses needed are listed below:

1. Level 1 Pre-Selection (six evening training course of which it is compulsory to attend three evenings or this can be held as a one day course which is compulsory to attend the whole day)

2. Level 1 Training (three full days all of which are compulsory)

3. Level 1 Assessment (three full days all of which are compulsory)

In addition to the above courses, it is necessary to gain a minimum of 20 logged hours of experience shadowing or assisting in a ski school on an artificial surface. These must be completed before the Level 1 Assessment course.

IASI often run additional Pre-Assessment courses which are optional training sessions for the weeks before the three days of formal assessment. During the course of training, you may be advised by an IASI Trainer that it would be beneficial to repeat certain courses if you do not meet the standard required.

Level 1 courses are usually run by IASI on the June and October bank holiday weekends in the Ski Club of Ireland in Kilternan. For current dates, please see the Courses section of the website
